What is crown lifting?
Crown lifting, sometimes called crown raising, is the removal or shortening of a tree's lower branches to increase the clearance between the ground and the base of the canopy.
The overall size and shape of the crown is not changed. What changes is the height at which the crown begins, giving more usable space beneath the tree, better light at ground level, and improved sightlines, without touching the upper canopy that gives the tree its character.
Lifting is specified by the required clearance height above ground level, for example, "crown lift to provide 4 metres clearance from ground level." This provides a clear, agreed-upon target and avoids ambiguity about the extent of the work.

Reasons to have a tree crown lifted
Clearance over a driveway, path or road where low branches obstruct vehicles or pedestrians.
Clearance beneath a tree overhanging a building, preventing roof or guttering damage from sweeping branches.
Improving light to a garden, patio, lawn or planted area beneath the canopy.
Improving visibility for drivers at junctions or along tree-lined roads and driveways.
Creating usable space under a tree for furniture, play equipment or parking.
Improving the proportion of the tree, balancing clear stem against canopy.

How we carry out crown lifting
Lower branches are removed back to their point of origin on the trunk, or shortened to a suitable upward-growing lateral. The right approach depends on the tree's age and condition.
On younger trees
Lifting is most straightforward. Smaller branches are removed cleanly, wounds heal quickly, and the tree's long-term structure is not compromised. Ideally, it is done progressively over several years, raising the canopy as the tree grows and removing branches while still small. This minimises wound size and gives the cleanest long-term result.
On mature trees
More caution is needed. BS 3998: 2010 is clear that on established trees, lifting should be restricted to secondary branches rather than wholesale removal of large limbs from the trunk. Large primary wounds are slow to seal and invite decay, so shortening rather than full removal is often the better approach.
In all cases, the live crown retained after lifting should be at least two-thirds of the tree's total height, and lifting should generally not exceed 15% of the live crown height in a single operation. Exceeding these thresholds places unnecessary stress on the tree and can affect its long-term stability.

What clearance height do you need?
We always agree a target clearance before work begins. These figures are common starting points.

When lifting alone may not be the answer
Crown thinning
Lifting is very effective but it has limits. If a tree feels oppressive because of its density rather than its height from the ground, lifting will make little difference, and crown thinning is likely the better option.
Crown reduction
If the tree has genuinely outgrown its position in overall height and spread, a crown reduction may be needed alongside or instead of lifting. And if there are structural issues or decay in the lower trunk, safety must be addressed first. We will always give you our honest assessment.

TPOs & Conservation Areas
Before any lifting takes place, it is essential to confirm whether your tree is subject to a Tree Preservation Order or sits within a Conservation Area. A TPO tree needs written consent from the Local Planning Authority; in a Conservation Area, six weeks' written notice is required. Carrying out work without permission is a criminal offence.
NP Tree Management carries out all necessary checks before any job and can manage the application or notification on your behalf. We have well-established relationships with planning authorities across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire.
