Crown Reduction

What is crown reduction?
Crown reduction reduces the overall height and spread of a tree's crown by cutting individual branches back to suitable growth points within the canopy. Unlike thinning, it physically reduces the tree's size.
When done correctly, it retains the crown's main framework and leaves a similar but proportionally smaller outline, preserving the tree's natural form rather than butchering it.
Under BS 3998: 2010, reductions are specified by measurement rather than percentage. A typical specification reads: reduce by 2 metres in height and 1 metre in lateral spread, all cuts to a suitable growth point, to leave a well-balanced shape. This replaced the old percentage system in 2010 and gives a much clearer picture of the result.

Why would a tree need crown reduction?
The tree has grown too large for its position and overhangs a building, boundary or neighbouring property.
It is blocking light to a property, garden, patio or solar panels.
Branches are damaging or threatening roof tiles, guttering, fences or outbuildings.
The canopy has become one-sided or unbalanced and the tree needs reshaping.
The weight of the crown needs to be reduced to lower the risk of limb failure.
A large canopy is creating wind resistance that threatens stability in storms.

How crown reduction is carried out
Every branch to be reduced is cut back to a suitable growth point, meaning a secondary branch or lateral large enough to take over as the natural growing tip. This is what makes a correctly executed reduction look natural.
As a rule, cuts are made to a lateral at least one third of the diameter of the section removed, kept as small as possible and, where feasible, no more than 100mm across. Every cut is a wound; correct technique minimises it and supports the tree's natural defences.
Crown reduction is not the same as topping
Topping is the indiscriminate removal of large sections of crown through the main stems, without regard to growth points. It was effectively removed from the British Standard in 2010. It creates large open wounds, triggers weak, rapid regrowth and leaves trees compromised. If a quote describes the work as "topping", treat that as a warning sign.

Not all trees tolerate reduction equally
How much a tree can take varies considerably by species, age and condition. A proper pre-work assessment is essential.

Crown reduction or crown thinning?
Crown reduction
Makes the tree physically smaller by cutting branch ends back throughout the canopy, reducing height and spread while keeping its shape at a reduced scale. Best where the tree has outgrown its position.
Crown thinning
Reduces canopy density without altering size or outline. The tree stays the same height and spread, but light and air pass through more freely. We also offer crown lifting to raise the lower canopy.

TPOs & Conservation Areas
Before any reduction takes place, it is essential to confirm whether your tree is subject to a Tree Preservation Order or sits within a Conservation Area. A TPO tree needs written consent from the Local Planning Authority; in a Conservation Area, six weeks' written notice is required. Carrying out work without permission is a criminal offence.
NP Tree Management carries out all necessary checks before any job and can manage the application or notification on your behalf. We have well-established relationships with planning authorities across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire.
