Crown Thinning

What is crown thinning?
Crown thinning is the selective removal of a proportion of smaller branches, usually from the outer crown, to give a more even density of foliage across a well-spaced branch structure.
Crucially, and as defined under BS 3998: 2010, thinning does not alter the overall size or shape of the tree. The canopy keeps its natural outline. What changes is its density.
Many customers ask us to "thin a tree down" when what they actually need is a crown reduction. The two are different operations with different results, and we will always explain which one applies to your tree during the free site visit. Thinning is mainly suited to broad-leaved deciduous trees and is not generally appropriate for conifers.

Why would a tree need crown thinning?
To increase light penetration through the canopy to the garden, patio or planting below.
To reduce wind resistance and the risk of wind-throw or branch failure by easing the sail effect of a dense crown.
To remove dead, diseased, crossing or weakly attached branches that pose a safety or health risk.
To improve air circulation through the crown, reducing the conditions in which fungal disease takes hold.
To reduce weight on individual limbs, particularly where a tree has grown heavily one-sided.
To manage regrowth after previous heavy pruning, which often produces a dense flush of overcrowded shoots.

How crown thinning works
Thinning is carried out by working systematically through the canopy, removing a carefully selected proportion of the secondary and tertiary branches to achieve an even, balanced reduction in density.
Under BS 3998: 2010, no more than 30% of the live crown should be removed in a single operation. Where more is genuinely needed, we spread it over successive visits to avoid stressing the tree. Branches are removed at their point of attachment, or shortened to a lateral at least a third of the diameter of the section removed.

Crown thinning or crown reduction?
Crown thinning
Reduces the density of the canopy without changing its overall size or shape. The tree stays the same height and spread; light and air move through it more freely. Best where shade, wind resistance or branch health is the concern.
Crown reduction
Reduces the overall height and spread by cutting branch ends back to suitable growth points, making the tree physically smaller while keeping its form. Best where a tree has outgrown its space or overhangs a building.

TPOs & Conservation Areas
Before any thinning takes place, it is essential to confirm whether your tree is subject to a Tree Preservation Order or sits within a Conservation Area. A TPO tree needs written consent from the Local Planning Authority; in a Conservation Area, six weeks' written notice is required. Carrying out work without permission is a criminal offence.
NP Tree Management carries out all necessary checks before any job and can manage the application or notification on your behalf. We have well-established relationships with planning authorities across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire.
