The Operation

What is deadwooding?

Deadwooding is the removal of dead, dying, diseased or structurally compromised branches from a tree's crown. As a tree matures it naturally produces deadwood, which is a normal part of its lifecycle.

The issue is not the deadwood itself, but where it falls. A dead branch over a garden, footpath, car park, play area or building can drop without warning, especially in high winds or after wet weather adds weight. Dead wood is often brittle and decayed inside, and can fail at a fraction of the load healthy wood would take.

Deadwooding targets and removes these hazard branches in a controlled, planned way, reducing the risk to people and property below without affecting the living crown.

The Broader Operation

What is crown cleaning?

Crown cleaning includes deadwooding but goes further, removing other unwanted material from the canopy. As defined by the Arboricultural Association, it covers:

Crossing, rubbing or co-dominant branches likely to damage each other over time.

Branch stubs from previously broken or poorly pruned branches, which are entry points for decay.

Excessive epicormic growth (water shoots) cluttering the crown structure.

Climbing plants such as ivy, which hide weaknesses, add weight and can suppress the tree’s own foliage.

Debris in branch unions, holding moisture and encouraging fungal activity at important junctions.

Essentially a health and housekeeping operation that stops minor issues compounding over time.

Why It Matters

Why regular deadwooding is important

The consequences of untreated deadwood are straightforward: dead branches fall. The question is when, and on to what.

Protects property: Reduces the risk of falling branches striking buildings, vehicles, fences or hard landscaping.

Protects people: Safeguards areas used by pedestrians, children and vehicles below the tree.

Improves health: Removes material that harbours fungal decay and disease before it spreads into healthy tissue.

Allows inspection: Reveals cavities, fungal fruiting bodies and structural issues hidden by dense live growth.

Improves appearance: Particularly when combined with a crown clean to remove water shoots and debris.

Supports compliance: Helps landowners, councils, schools and housing associations meet duty-of-care obligations.

When deadwood should be left in place

Not all deadwood should be removed. Dead wood is one of the most valuable wildlife habitats in the UK, supporting over 1,700 species of invertebrate along with specialist fungi, lichens, mosses, birds and bats. Some of the most threatened species, including the stag beetle, depend entirely on decaying wood.

The Arboricultural Association is clear that removal should be proportionate to the identified risk, not simply comprehensive. Deadwood that is not over a path, building, vehicle or occupied area often does not need removing at all. Where a branch over a sensitive spot needs addressing but has real habitat value, shortening rather than full removal is often the right compromise. We always recommend the proportionate approach.

Our Approach

How we carry out deadwooding

Before any work begins, we carry out a thorough assessment, establishing what deadwood is present, how large it is, its condition, whether it is positioned over a target and the most appropriate approach.

Where deadwood is accessible from the ground or our cherry picker, we work methodically through the crown, removing hazard branches cleanly. For higher work, our arborists are experienced in accessing mature and complex trees safely by climbing.

Best done on a cycle

Deadwooding is most effective as part of a regular inspection and maintenance programme. We are happy to advise on a sensible schedule for your property, whether that is a single garden tree or a larger estate with multiple trees in managed areas. All removed material is chipped, taken away, or left as log habitat as you prefer, and we leave every site clean and tidy.

Deadwooding on TPO trees: usually permitted

A common question is whether deadwooding needs permission on protected trees. Generally, no. Removing dead branches from a TPO tree is normally permitted without a formal application, provided the work is limited to dead wood only and carried out by a qualified arborist to good practice. The same applies in Conservation Areas. This exemption recognises deadwooding as routine maintenance.

The exemption covers dead wood only. Any removal of living wood, even within a crown clean, needs the appropriate notice or application. We carry out all necessary checks and advise clearly on what is and is not covered.

NP Tree Management have always been a reliable, effective and wholly professional team whom we have been using their services from hedge pruning to tree maintenance & felling for over two years now. Neil (proprietor) and his ever efficient team of Dean, Dan, John and Reece have always done a top-notch job. They are courteous, ever so proficient in their trade and do a sterling job without damaging our other plants and home. Reliable as ever and Neil is a very conscientious individual who will provide a very competitive quote once he has assessed the work to be done. I value his opinion as what not to do and what should be. He knows his trees and have full confidence in his advice and recommendations (that is why we use his services when we need him to do the works at our property). Kudos to Neil and his team and keep the excellent work standards going. Highly recommend NP Tree Management over anyone else in the same trade. Well done for all your hard work gentleman & thank you for keeping our gardens pristine.

I recently used NP Tree Management for hedge cutting and was really impressed with the whole experience. They did a fantastic job shaping and tidying the hedges — everything looks neat, even, and has made such a difference to the garden. They also cleared away all the waste, leaving everything spotless afterwards. While they were here, they spotted an old stump that would be best removed and gave honest, helpful advice without any pressure. I’ve since booked them back in next week to take care of that too, which says it all really. Would definitely recommend NP Tree Management for anyone looking for reliable, high-quality work!

I couldn’t be more impressed with the service I received from NP Tree Management. From the very first interaction, their team was professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely committed to doing the job right. They arrived exactly when they said they would, assessed the situation thoroughly, and explained the entire process in a way that was clear and reassuring. What really stood out was their attention to safety and detail—this wasn’t just about cutting down a tree, it was about protecting the surrounding property and leaving everything in excellent condition. The whole team worked efficiently and with great care, handling even the most challenging parts of the job with confidence. When they finished, the cleanup was immaculate—you’d hardly know there had been a large tree there at all. It’s rare to find a company that combines skill, reliability, and genuine customer care so well. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone needing tree removal or related services. Truly top-notch work.

The team were professional annd organised and did not rush to complete the job early- they did a great job of cutting back three trees and removing one tree completely. Cleaned up fully on completion. Total cost was very reasonable for the amount of work carried out.

These guys are great. We've used them now for 3/4 years to trim all of the tall bushes in our garden. They are very careful to avoid trampling or damaging beds and also extremely tidy with taking away trimmings. Strongly recommend!

We needed some pruning work done to a tall hedge adjoining our property, so we contacted NP Tree Management, as they were a local business and had good reviews. They came round promptly to assess the job, and their quote was extremely reasonable. Once we decided to go ahead with the work, we were kept well-informed of the progress of the job and when the lads came round to do the work, they were efficient and courteous. They cleared up well afterwards and took away all the debris and we are incredibly pleased with the result. We will not hesitate to contact them again if we require any further tree work in the future and highly recommend their customer service and workmanship.

NP Tree Management were so helpful and professional from providing a clear and competitive quotation, through to carrying out the work. We had a large, diseased tree that needed removing and it was an emotional wrench to see it go. The work was carried out with complete professionalism and the team left our garden immaculately tidy. Apart from the space where the tree once stood, you would not have known they had been there. I would highly recommend this company.

The team were friendly, efficient and skilled at their job. They worked tirelessly in the rain to get the job done and cleaned up after themselves. We asked for a couple of extra things to be done on the day, which they accommodated for us. Their pricing is fair and I would recommend them to family & friends.
