Why a Tree Surgeon

Why use a tree surgery company for your hedges?

Most hedge cutting can be handled by a gardener with a trimmer, and for a small, low hedge that is often perfectly adequate. But for anything larger, taller, more overgrown or more technically demanding, there are real advantages to using a qualified team.

We carry £10 million public liability insurance, which matters when working at height alongside boundaries, driveways, vehicles and footpaths. Our team is NPTC qualified and City & Guilds accredited, and we use our own cherry picker to tackle tall hedges safely that would be dangerous with a ladder and a domestic trimmer.

We also understand the biology of hedges. Cutting at the right time, to the right specification and with proper technique is what separates a hedge that thrives and densifies from one that is repeatedly stressed or gradually opens up and loses its privacy.

What We Offer

Hedge services we provide

Cutting & trimming

Routine cutting to maintain your hedge at the desired height, width and shape, to a clean, even finish with all arisings removed. One-off cuts or a regular annual or twice-yearly schedule.

Hedge reduction

Where a hedge has grown well beyond the desired size, we reduce it back to manageable dimensions. All cuts are made to a suitable lateral to encourage healthy, dense regrowth and avoid open wounds.

Shaping & formal trimming

For architectural and formal features, box, yew, hornbeam and beech, precise shaping to clean geometric lines. We work to the shape agreed with you and take the time to get it right.

Rejuvenation

Neglected, open or gappy hedges can often be brought back through hard rejuvenation pruning. Hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple, privet and hornbeam respond well. We assess species and condition first.

Hedge removal

Where a hedge is diseased, dead, inappropriate or unwanted, we carry out full removal including disposal. Stump grinding is available separately if the roots need eliminating.

Planting advice

Replacing or establishing a hedge? We advise on appropriate species for your location, soil and purpose, whether privacy screening, wildlife value or formal boundary definition.

Nesting birds and the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981

This is one of the most important things to understand about hedge work. Under the Act, it is a criminal offence to intentionally damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built. Cutting a hedge during the nesting season and destroying an active nest, even inadvertently, is an offence.

The main nesting season runs from March to August inclusive. During this period we will not cut hedges where active nests may be present without first carrying out a careful nest check. The safest windows for routine cutting are late August to late February, with November to February ideal for most species. We take this seriously and factor it into all scheduling.

Know Your Hedge

Hedge species we work with

Different species have different requirements, growth habits and tolerances. Here is how we approach the most common types.

Leylandii & conifers: The most frequently requested hedge work we do. Fast-growing and tall if left unmanaged. They must never be cut back into dead brown wood, as they will not regenerate from old wood. Regular trimming while green is the only reliable approach.

Beech & hornbeam: Both retain dried leaves through winter when trimmed in late summer, giving year-round screening. They tolerate quite hard reductions and are best cut once a year in late summer.

Box: The classic formal hedging plant, but prone to box blight and box moth caterpillar, both of which can devastate a hedge quickly. We can advise on monitoring and, if needed, replacement species.

Yew: One of the longest-lived and handsomest formal hedges. Slow-growing but tolerant of hard cutting, even back into older wood, making yew an excellent candidate for rejuvenation after years of neglect.

Hawthorn, blackthorn & native mixed: Traditional rural hedging with high wildlife value. These respond exceptionally well to hard cutting and can be laid as well as trimmed. Timing is critical for wildlife reasons.

Privet & laurel: Privet is fast-growing and tolerates hard cutting, often needing two or three cuts a year. Laurel is best cut with secateurs or loppers rather than a trimmer, which leaves an untidy browning finish, and ideally before mid-August.

NP Tree Management have always been a reliable, effective and wholly professional team whom we have been using their services from hedge pruning to tree maintenance & felling for over two years now. Neil (proprietor) and his ever efficient team of Dean, Dan, John and Reece have always done a top-notch job. They are courteous, ever so proficient in their trade and do a sterling job without damaging our other plants and home. Reliable as ever and Neil is a very conscientious individual who will provide a very competitive quote once he has assessed the work to be done. I value his opinion as what not to do and what should be. He knows his trees and have full confidence in his advice and recommendations (that is why we use his services when we need him to do the works at our property). Kudos to Neil and his team and keep the excellent work standards going. Highly recommend NP Tree Management over anyone else in the same trade. Well done for all your hard work gentleman & thank you for keeping our gardens pristine.

I recently used NP Tree Management for hedge cutting and was really impressed with the whole experience. They did a fantastic job shaping and tidying the hedges — everything looks neat, even, and has made such a difference to the garden. They also cleared away all the waste, leaving everything spotless afterwards. While they were here, they spotted an old stump that would be best removed and gave honest, helpful advice without any pressure. I’ve since booked them back in next week to take care of that too, which says it all really. Would definitely recommend NP Tree Management for anyone looking for reliable, high-quality work!

I couldn’t be more impressed with the service I received from NP Tree Management. From the very first interaction, their team was professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely committed to doing the job right. They arrived exactly when they said they would, assessed the situation thoroughly, and explained the entire process in a way that was clear and reassuring. What really stood out was their attention to safety and detail—this wasn’t just about cutting down a tree, it was about protecting the surrounding property and leaving everything in excellent condition. The whole team worked efficiently and with great care, handling even the most challenging parts of the job with confidence. When they finished, the cleanup was immaculate—you’d hardly know there had been a large tree there at all. It’s rare to find a company that combines skill, reliability, and genuine customer care so well. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone needing tree removal or related services. Truly top-notch work.

The team were professional annd organised and did not rush to complete the job early- they did a great job of cutting back three trees and removing one tree completely. Cleaned up fully on completion. Total cost was very reasonable for the amount of work carried out.

We needed some pruning work done to a tall hedge adjoining our property, so we contacted NP Tree Management, as they were a local business and had good reviews. They came round promptly to assess the job, and their quote was extremely reasonable. Once we decided to go ahead with the work, we were kept well-informed of the progress of the job and when the lads came round to do the work, they were efficient and courteous. They cleared up well afterwards and took away all the debris and we are incredibly pleased with the result. We will not hesitate to contact them again if we require any further tree work in the future and highly recommend their customer service and workmanship.

NP Tree Management were so helpful and professional from providing a clear and competitive quotation, through to carrying out the work. We had a large, diseased tree that needed removing and it was an emotional wrench to see it go. The work was carried out with complete professionalism and the team left our garden immaculately tidy. Apart from the space where the tree once stood, you would not have known they had been there. I would highly recommend this company.

The team were friendly, efficient and skilled at their job. They worked tirelessly in the rain to get the job done and cleaned up after themselves. We asked for a couple of extra things to be done on the day, which they accommodated for us. Their pricing is fair and I would recommend them to family & friends.
