Planting & Aftercare
in Benson
Planting new trees and hedges, and looking after them through the early years when they are at their most vulnerable. Species advice, planting, staking, formative pruning and a seasonal watering service, for gardens, estates, councils and commercial grounds.
New planting is made or lost in its first few years
Most young trees and hedge plants that fail do not fail on the day they go in. They fail over the two or three years afterwards, through drought, competition from grass, a tie left too tight, or a stake left on far too long.
We plant, and we come back to look after what we have planted. That means choosing species suited to the soil and to the space they have to grow into, planting them properly, and then keeping an eye on everything while it establishes.
Whether it is a single specimen tree in a garden, a new native hedge along a boundary, or a run of planting across a commercial site, the aftercare matters as much as the planting itself.

Planting and aftercare services
Species selection and advice
The right plant in the wrong place causes problems for decades. We advise on tree and hedge species based on your soil, aspect, the space available, proximity to buildings and drains, and what you want the planting to do, whether that is screening, shelter, wildlife value or a formal boundary.
Tree and hedge planting
Supply and planting of young stock, larger specimens and bare root hedging, set at the correct depth and spacing with the ground properly prepared, then staked, tied and guarded where the site calls for it.
Seasonal watering service
Drought stress is the single biggest cause of failure in new planting. We run a watering service through the growing season, typically May to September, and recommend it for the first two years after planting. We carry this out for councils, builders and developers as well as for private clients.
Stake, tie and guard checks
A tie left too tight will bite into the stem, and a stake left too long stops a tree building its own strength. We check, adjust and remove stakes, ties and guards at the right time, rather than leaving them on and forgetting about them.
Formative pruning
Light, well-timed pruning in the early years builds a sound branch structure in a young tree and a dense, even base in a new hedge. It also avoids the large, expensive cuts that badly formed planting needs later in life.
The best time to plant
Bare root trees and hedging go in through the dormant season, roughly November to March. That is when planting is cheapest and establishment is most reliable. Container grown stock can go in at other times of year, but it will need a good deal more watering to get through its first summer.
If you are planning planting for the coming season, it is worth speaking to us early so the right stock can be sourced in good time.

Planning new planting?
Tell us about the site and what you would like to achieve, whether that is trees, hedging or both. We will come out, advise on suitable species and give you a straightforward quote for the planting and for the aftercare that follows, watering included.
