What is tree pollarding?
Tree pollarding is one of the oldest tree management techniques in the UK, removing the upper branches back to the main framework or stem to keep a tree significantly smaller than it would naturally grow.
Over time, the cut points develop into characteristic swollen knobs known as the bolling, from which fresh growth emerges each season. As defined by the Arboricultural Association, once a tree has been pollarded, it must be re-pollarded on a regular cyclical basis, always retaining that original pollard point. It is not a one-off job.
All pollarding carried out by NP Tree Management complies with BS 3998: 2010, the British Standard for tree work.

Why pollard a tree?
Control size and prevent a tree outgrowing its space.
Reduce shade over gardens, driveways or properties.
Keep trees clear of cables, street lighting and road signs.
Allow vehicles or pedestrians to pass beneath the canopy.
Reduce root growth and protect foundations and drains.
Rejuvenate an older tree and extend its lifespan.
Reduce leaf and twig debris through the year.

When is the best time to pollard?
Late Winter - Early Spring
Optimum Window
Tree is dormant, sap not yet risen. Lowest stress, lowest infection risk for most species.
Summer
Some exceptions
Fruit trees often benefit from summer pollarding; walnuts also prefer summer.
Late Autumn / Summer
Acer species
Acers are prone to sap bleeding in spring; they are better done in late autumn or summer.
Autumn
Least favourable
For most species, decay fungi can enter fresh cuts more readily at this time.

How NP Tree Management carries out pollarding
Every job is undertaken by NPTC qualified arborists in line with BS 3998: 2010. Before we begin, we check for TPOs and Conservation Area restrictions and conduct a full on-site risk assessment.
Young Trees
We select three to five branches to form the permanent framework and cut them back to the stem, stimulating fresh growth.
Established pollards
We re-pollard on the appropriate cycle, pruning back to just above the previous cutting points to retain the pollard head.
Overgrown & neglected
We assess the structural risk carefully before recommending the safest course of action for an unmanaged pollard.
TPOs & Conservation Areas
Before any pollarding can take place, you must confirm whether your tree is subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or sits within a Conservation Area. Carrying out work on a protected tree without prior consent from your Local Planning Authority is a criminal offence and can result in an unlimited fine.
NP Tree Management carries out all necessary checks as a matter of course. If your tree is protected, we can advise on the application or notification process and handle the paperwork on your behalf. We have long-standing working relationships with local authorities across the region.
