What is stump grinding?
Stump grinding is the most efficient and least disruptive way to remove a tree stump. A high-speed rotating cutting wheel chips the stump and its surface roots down to below ground level.
The process produces wood chip, which can be used as mulch or removed. The resulting void is typically filled with the chippings, then topped with soil if needed, leaving the area level and ready for turfing, planting, fencing or building work.
Grinding does not remove the entire root system, which may extend well beyond the stump. In most gardens this is not a problem, as the roots decay naturally once the tree is gone. Where roots need full excavation, for example ahead of construction, we advise on the best approach.

Why is stump removal worth doing?
Regrowth: many species send up vigorous shoots from the stump for years. Common with sycamore, cherry, lime and elder. Grinding stops it.
Fungal disease: decaying stumps are an entry point for honey fungus and other root-rotting fungi, which can spread to healthy plants nearby.
Safety hazard: stumps hidden in long grass are a tripping risk, and low stumps near mowing areas threaten lawnmower blades and operators.
Pest habitat: decaying stumps attract wood-boring insects, ants and beetles that can spread to nearby structures or trees.
Wasted space: a stump in a lawn, border or patio prevents the ground being used for planting, landscaping or building.
Aesthetics: a bare stump, or one sprouting untidy regrowth, is rarely an attractive feature. Grinding restores a clean, level surface.

How we carry out stump grinding
Assessment: We look at stump diameter, root spread, proximity to structures, access and what you want to use the area for. This shapes the approach and gives an accurate quote.
Grinding: The cutting wheel is worked methodically across the stump face, progressively lowering through the wood. For most garden stumps we grind to 150 to 300mm below ground level.
Backfill & finish: Chippings are mixed back into the hole as fill, or taken away if you prefer. We rake the area level and leave the site clean and tidy.
Access Is Rarely a Problem
Many garden stumps sit behind gates, in rear gardens or surrounded by borders. We carry narrow access equipment that passes through a standard pedestrian gate, making most rear garden stumps straightforward. For very tight access, we assess on a case-by-case basis and will always be upfront if a stump cannot be reached safely. We also handle commercial sites, estates, schools and open land.
