What is tree felling?
Tree felling is the controlled removal of a tree by cutting through the trunk and bringing it to the ground, or taking it down in sections. It is one of the most technically demanding operations in arboriculture.
Every job demands a thorough assessment of the tree's condition, the surrounding environment and any potential hazards before a single cut is made.
All felling carried out by NP Tree Management complies with BS 3998: 2010 and is subject to a full site risk assessment. We never rush a felling job. Proper planning is what separates a clean, safe removal from an accident.

Why fell a tree?
The tree is dead, dying or structurally unsafe.
Disease or decay has compromised the tree beyond treatment.
Storm or wind damage has destabilised the roots or canopy.
The tree is too close to a property, boundary or utility line.
Roots are damaging drains, foundations or hard landscaping.
The tree blocks light or restricts use of outdoor spaces.
Site clearance is required ahead of building works.
Felling isn't always the answer. Where crown reduction, thinning or pruning will solve the problem, we will say so.

Which trees can be pollarded?
Not every tree can or should be felled the same way. The method we choose depends on the size and condition of the tree, what surrounds it and the access available.
Straight Felling
Where space allows, a tree can be felled the traditional way: cut at the base and guided to the ground in a controlled direction. A precise directional sink cut, followed by a back cut, leaves a hinge of wood to steer the fall exactly where we want it. Efficient where there is clear ground, but it demands accurate assessment and experienced technique to execute safely.
Sectional Tree Dismantling
When a tree is too close to a property, fence, vehicle or other obstacle for straight felling to be safe, it is removed in sections from the top down. Our arborists work at height, climbing the tree or using our own cherry picker, to take the crown apart piece by piece before working down the trunk. Slower, but it gives precise control over where each section lands.
Sectional Felling with Rigging
For trees in particularly confined or sensitive locations, sections are not cut and dropped but lowered in a controlled manner using ropes, pulleys and rigging equipment. This prevents sections from freefalling and allows them to be placed gently on the ground without risk of damage to the surrounding area. A skilled operation that demands experience and the right kit.
Dangerous & Hazardous Removal
Trees that are dead, structurally compromised or leaning dangerously call for a different approach entirely. These jobs carry a higher inherent risk and demand careful pre-work assessment. Our team has extensive experience removing difficult and dangerous trees safely, including emergency felling following storm damage.

What happens after felling?
Cleared from site
We remove all timber and brash, leaving the area completely clear and ready for whatever comes next.
Logs & chippings
Prefer to keep the wood? Logs can be left for firewood and chippings used as garden mulch, which many of our customers appreciate.
Stump grinding
As a separate service, we can grind the stump below ground level, leaving the area ready for replanting, turfing or landscaping.

TPOs & Conservation Areas
Before any tree is felled, it is essential to confirm whether it is subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or sits within a Conservation Area. Felling a protected tree without consent from the Local Planning Authority is a criminal offence, carrying potentially unlimited fines and a requirement to replace the tree.
NP Tree Management carries out all necessary checks before any work commences. If consent is required, we can manage the application on your behalf. We have established relationships with local planning authorities across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire and can guide you through what can otherwise be a confusing process.
