What is tree pruning?
Tree pruning is the selective removal of parts of a tree, whether branches or shoots, to improve its health, structure, safety or appearance. It is one of the most important and most frequently required aspects of tree care.
Pruning is not a single operation. It is an umbrella term covering a range of techniques, each with a different purpose and a different outcome. Knowing which type your tree actually needs is the first and most important question, and one we help every customer answer clearly before any work begins.
All pruning carried out by NP Tree Management complies with BS 3998: 2010, the British Standard for tree work, which sets out the correct approach for every type of pruning operation.

Types of tree pruning we carry out
Crown Thinning
Selective removal of branches from within the canopy to reduce density, increase light and improve air circulation, without altering the tree's overall size or shape. Best for healthy, well-proportioned trees casting heavy shade.
Crown Reduction
Reducing the overall height and spread by cutting branch ends back to suitable growth points, leaving a smaller but naturally proportioned outline. Best for trees that have outgrown their space or overhang buildings.
Crown Lifting
Removing or shortening lower branches to increase clearance between the ground and the base of the canopy. The upper canopy is untouched. Best where low branches obstruct access, light or vehicles.
Deadwooding
Removing dead, dying or structurally compromised branches from the crown. Deadwood can fall without warning and is heavy enough to cause serious injury or damage. Part of any routine maintenance programme.
Formative Pruning
Carried out on young trees to establish a strong, balanced branch structure early. It addresses poor branch angles, co-dominant stems and weak growth before they become structural hazards. One of the most cost-effective long-term investments in tree management.
Fruit Tree Pruning
Apple, pear, plum, cherry and others need a different approach to amenity trees. Timing and technique affect both health and cropping, and hard pruning at the wrong time can set a fruit tree back significantly. We advise the right programme for your trees.
Pollarding
Removing the upper branches back to the main framework at a prescribed height, maintained on a regular cycle. Once started, pollarding must be continued to keep the tree safe and healthy.

Why proper tree pruning matters
A well-pruned tree is healthier, safer and more attractive than a neglected or poorly pruned one. The benefits of regular, correct pruning are significant.
Health: Removing dead, diseased and crossing branches reduces entry points for decay and pests, letting the tree direct energy into healthy growth.
Safety: Dead or weakly attached branches can fail without warning. Regular pruning reduces the risk over properties, paths and parked vehicles.
Longevity: Correctly and regularly pruned trees tend to live longer. Unchecked defects, overcrowding and disease shorten a tree's life considerably.
Amenity: A well-maintained tree is an asset to a property. Correct pruning keeps the form and character that makes a mature tree worth keeping.
Compliance: For TPO trees and those in Conservation Areas, keeping the tree in good condition is part of the responsibility of protected status.

Pruning & Tree Preservation Orders
If your tree is subject to a Tree Preservation Order or is within a Conservation Area, you must obtain the appropriate permission or give the correct notice to your Local Planning Authority before any pruning. This applies to all pruning, not just felling.
NP Tree Management carries out all necessary checks as part of our standard process. If an application or notification is required, we manage it on your behalf, and can advise on what is likely to be approved for your tree.
